A kidney transplant, also known as a renal transplant, is a treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). A kidney transplant is a major surgery in which a person with kidney failure receives a new kidney from either a living or deceased donor. A successful kidney transplant is the closest thing to natural kidney function and is widely regarded as the most effective treatment for ESRD, offering the possibility of living a longer, healthier life. Because you only need one functioning kidney to be healthy, only one kidney is transplanted during surgery. Your two original kidneys are usually left in place, and the new donor kidney is placed in another part of your abdomen. The ureter (urinary tube) from the donor's kidney will then be connected to your bladder. If the kidney transplant surgery is successful, your new kidney will filter your blood and produce urine, just as your own kidneys did before you developed kidney disease.
