Diabetes is a common complication following kidney transplantation. Posttransplantation diabetes mellitus (PTDM) is associated with increased mortality and morbidity and, in particular, higher rates of cardiovascular disease and infection, which are the leading causes of death in kidney transplant recipients. This topic reviews the epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical implications, as well as recommendations for screening and treatment. Issues relating to kidney transplantation and combined kidney-pancreas transplantation in patients with preexisting diabetes are discussed elsewhere. This generalized information is a limited summary of diagnosis, treatment, and/or medication information. It is not meant to be comprehensive and should be used as a tool to help the user understand and/or assess potential diagnostic and treatment options. It does NOT include all information about conditions, treatments, medications, side effects, or risks that may apply to a specific patient.
