A kidney stone is a hard, crystalline mineral material that forms within the urinary tract or kidney. Kidney stones are a common cause of blood in the urine (hematuria) and severe abdominal, flank, or groin pain. Renal calculi are another name for kidney stones. Nephrolithiasis is the medical term for having kidney stones. Urolithiasis refers to the presence of stones in any part of the urinary tract, while ureterolithiasis refers to stones in the ureters. A kidney stone can occur in anyone, but people with certain diseases and conditions, as well as those taking certain medications, are more likely to develop one. Men are more likely than women to develop urinary tract stones. The majority of urinary stones form in people aged 20 to 49, and those who are prone to multiple attacks of kidney stones usually develop their first stones in their second or third decade of life. People who have had more than one kidney stone are more likely to develop additional stones.
