The kidneys are two about fist-sized bean-shaped organs. These are positioned just below the rib cage on each side of your spine. About a half cup of blood is filtered by healthy kidneys every minute, removing wastes and extra water to create urine. Two tiny muscular tubes called ureters, one on each side of the bladder, carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder. Your bladder stores urine. The bladder, ureters, and kidneys make up the urinary tract.Your body's kidneys are in charge of eliminating waste and extra fluid. In addition to eliminating acid produced by your body's cells, your kidneys also maintain a normal level of water, salts, and minerals in your blood, including potassium, phosphorus, sodium, and calcium. Nephrons, or roughly a million filtering units, make up each of your kidneys. Every nephron has a tubule and a filter known as the glomerulus. Your blood is filtered by the glomerulus in the nephrons, and then the tubule restores necessary chemicals to your blood while eliminating waste.
