Maintain regular checkups while you recuperate. Close observation is required for a few weeks after you leave the hospital to assess how well your new kidney is functioning and to ensure that your body is not rejecting it. In the weeks following your transplant, you might need to have blood tests many times per week and have your medications changed. If you live in another town during this time, you might need to make accommodations close to the transplant center. For the rest of your life, take medication. Several drugs will be required of you following your kidney transplant. Drugs that suppress the immune system assist in preventing the immune system from attacking and rejecting your replacement kidney. Additional medications assist in lowering your risk of developing various issues following your transplant, such as infection.
